Exploring Lacey Sports Park

Located in Oskaloosa, Lacey Sports Park is more than just a hub for ball games — it’s a destination for families looking to combine recreation, science, and outdoor adventure. With athletic fields, the Oskaloosa Solar System Walk About, and access to the Mahaska Community Recreation Trail, this park offers something for every age group.

Whether you’re cheering on a game, taking a golf cart ride around the trail loop, or exploring unique educational attractions, Lacey Sports Park makes for a perfect family outing.

What to Do

Solar System at Lacey Recreation ComplexOskaloosa Solar System Walk About

One of the park’s most unique features is the Oskaloosa Solar System Walk About, a scaled model of our solar system that blends science, art, and education. Your journey begins at the massive 86-foot Sun Dome, easily visible from the parking lot between the 5-plex fields and the Babe Ruth fields. From there, you can view the planets arranged in scale and then continue north (past the parking lot) on a trail that demonstrates the distance between each one.

Informational kiosks (still in progress) along the way make this a fun and educational stop for kids and adults alike. Don’t miss the nearby concession and restroom building, which features a striking mural of three mammoths—a nod to an area dig site where mammoth fossils were discovered.

Another highlight of Lacey Sports Park is its access to the Mahaska Community Recreation Trail. Families can reserve 7-passenger golf carts (up to four carts available at a time) to ride the full loop of the trail together. This is a fantastic option if you’re traveling with kids, grandparents, or larger groups who want to experience the trail without walking or biking the entire distance.

We tried this ourselves and had an absolute blast—riding together, stopping at scenic points, and enjoying the ease of seeing more of Oskaloosa in one trip.
