Why Should you hike Wesley Creek?
From fossil hunting and exploring the historic quarry site to splashing in the pool of the creek's waterfall, Wesley Creek offers an immersive and educational experience for the whole family.
Where to Park
If you have been to Lacey-Keosauqua State Park before, chances are you have unknowingly driven right past the parking lot to Welsey Creek. As you enter the park from the Keosauqua side off Highway 1, take the second left. The parking lot is located near the bottom of the hill along a curve. If you happen to cross a limestone bridge, you've gone too far.
Where to Go/Hike
From the parking lot, follow the mowed path that leads you along the creek's edge. The trail, totaling 1/10 of a mile, gradually narrows as rocky terrain gives way to the first stop—the historic quarry site. Here, you'll discover remnants of Iowa's quarrying past, including fossils and evidence of the Civilian Conservation Corps' (CCC) craftsmanship. Be sure to respect the park rules which protect all rocks and fossils within the park. So take a picture, but leave the fossils and rocks where you found them.
Continuing along the limestone bluff you will find a rough, narrow trail. Approximately 200 feet beyond the quarry you'll arrive at Wesley Creek, where the adventure truly begins. Hike up the creek to discover the Wesley Creek Waterfall—a hidden gem best experienced after a spring rain. Splash in the pool below the waterfall or explore further upstream to uncover the creek's natural wonders. Just be sure to stay on park property which is well marked by fences.
Below the waterfall, Wesley Creek winds its way through a stunning canyon. Scramble over rocks and navigate the creek's twists and turns as you soak in the beauty of this area. For those with ample time and energy, a hike to the Limestone Bridge built by the CCC offers further exploration opportunities before returning to the parking lot.
What to Expect
As you journey along Wesley Creek, expect to encounter a variety of natural formations and historic landmarks:
CCC Quarry: Your first stop will be the CCC Quarry. This is the location where the CCC crew would quarry the limestone for the different park projects which include the Main Lodge, Beach House Lodge, the stairway to the lake, and many of the bridges within the park. You can still see the drill marks and two rods stuck in the remaining limestone of the quarry.
Wesley Creek Waterfall: Discover a hidden waterfall which flows over a limestone ledge. The waterfall is best experienced after a recent rainfall. The pool below the waterfall typically holds water later into the year.
Wesley Creek Canyon: After viewing the waterfall, you can hike back downstream to where the creek narrows into a beautiful canyon. The creek is filled with limestone boulders and lined with sandstone and limestone bluffs.
